Air travel have recommenced at Edinburgh Airport after a significant ATC system failure grounded all flights.

Every arrival and departure were halted after an systems problem that occurred at about 08:30.

Several flyers found themselves stranded in planes on the runway during the disruption.

Flights Resume with Continued Disruption

The airport confirmed at 10:40 that operations had restarted, and expressed gratitude to passengers for their "cooperation and patience".

However, considerable delays are likely to affect schedules. Flights to London Gatwick, Bristol, Amsterdam and Frankfurt have been called off, with numerous other services facing hold-ups.

A spokesperson had initially projected that 27 departures and 11 arrivals could be impacted.

"Passengers are advised to check directly with their airline for the most up-to-date details on their specific flights," was the consistent advice.

Cause of the Chaos

The problem was traced to the widespread suspension to an IT issue with its control tower systems vendor.

Passengers continue to be advised to confirm the details of their journey before traveling to the airport as residual delays are cleared.
