Alphabet Commits $15bn to Build AI Computing Facility in India
Alphabet, Google's holding company Alphabet plans to commit fifteen billion dollars for constructing an AI computing facility in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
This center, to be established in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam, will become a segment of the worldwide network of Google of artificial intelligence hubs spread across a dozen nations.
"This represents the biggest artificial intelligence center that we are committing funds to across the globe, apart from the US," Google Cloud's chief executive said at an gathering in capital Delhi this Tuesday, noting that the investment will be spread over the next five years.
The announcement occurs when American President Donald Trump has been asking companies from the United States to give priority to investments within the country.
India's Growing Role in AI Infrastructure
The country has emerged as a major hub for AI data centres. The country's low data costs and swiftly increasing online population have turned it into a focal point for AI and cloud growth for major tech firms.
"This center will deliver our pioneering tech solutions to enterprises and users in India, accelerating AI development and promoting progress throughout the nation," stated Alphabet's chief executive Sundar Pichai.
Project Details
An official contract to finalise the venture is scheduled for signing on Tuesday, state authorities confirmed.
"This represents a massive leap for our state's digital future, innovation, and worldwide position," stated the state's technology minister Nara Lokesh.
The venture will combine cloud and AI infrastructure with green energy infrastructure and an broader fiber-optic system.
Andhra Pradesh's Data Center Vision
The project is included in the Andhra Pradesh government's strategy to create 6GW of data center capability by 2029.
Data centers are actual buildings that accommodate the networking and computing devices that organizations use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.
They contain servers, data storage systems and networking hardware like network routers and security firewalls, along with the necessary power and cooling systems to function properly.
