In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
